Like many cinematographers, Conrad Hall had higher aspirations. "When Hall first began working with Richard Brooks," John Gregory Dunne once recalled, "the director said, 'Well, kid, I suppose you want to be a director.' Hall said he did. 'Direct your own f---ing picture,' Brooks told him, 'not mine.'"
