Stubborn as a Mule

One day Hal Wallis announced his plans to leave Warner Bros. and form a rival production unit at Paramount. Jack Warner was not amused. When Wallis formally gave his notice, Warner vowed to make his final month intolerable. Wallis, however, was equally determined to tough it out. When Warner locked him out of his office, for example, Wallis simply set up on the lawn, bent on continuing with his duties. When word got back to Warner, he decided to upp the ante -- and ordered that a truckload of horse manure be dumped beside Wallis's desk.
