"Buddy Hackett told me a story one time," David Brenner later recalled. "One of the heads of the studios came up to him one day and said, 'When I look at you I see an Academy Award winning actor. I'm going to take you under my wings personally, with my studio backing me up, and one day I'm going to be sitting in the audience when you walk up and you get the Oscar. And then he said this:
"'Seven and a half years later, I get on the phone and call the guy. I get his machine. I say, 'How are you doing? Buddy Hackett. I'm going out for about an hour.' He never heard from the guy again."
