Deaf Choreographer

"Julian Mitchell was the director most frequently used by Florenz Ziegfeld to stage his musical extravaganzas. He did his job brilliantly in spite of the fact that he was deaf. In order to judge the dancers' steps or calculate the rhythm of a scene, he would put his forehead or his ear to the piano to feel the tempo. One of the stars who worked for him, Hazel Dawn, remembered one time when a great thunderstorm had broken out while he was working with a chorus and he complained, 'Why are you girls shuffling your feet!'"
