Ptolemy

In 320 BC, an army led by Ptolemy I of Egypt attacked Jerusalem. The city -- which had withstood the formidable Sennacherib and Nebuchadnezzar with admirable tenacity -- fell easily. Why? The Egyptians had attacked on a holy day and, unlike the Israelis in 1973, the ultra-pious Jews of yore refused to fight on the Sabbath, even in self-defense.
