Sir Thomas Beecham was approached before a concert one evening by the pianist Myra Hess. "Are you going to conduct by heart again tonight, Sir Thomas?" she asked. "Of course," the conductor proudly declared. "In that case," Hess replied, "I am going to need my music!"
[Unwilling to be cowed by the Nazis, Hess insisted on performing her famous lunchtime recitals at London's National Gallery throughout the Blitz (the bombing of London during World War II).]
