Mountain Rescue Dog

A St Bernard named Bruno earned a measure of fame in the village of Valchiusella in the northern Italian Alps where he was a member of the local mountain rescue team. Brimming with enthusiasm, he often bounded ahead in search of lost climbers. On one memorable occasion, in 1980, it took a second search party longer to recover Bruno than the climbers he was trying to find. This was the eighth time in two years that Bruno had been rescued and, sadly, he was soon retired.
