While serving as an observer with the Chinese Army in the late 1930's, U.S. Marine Lieutenant Colonel Evans F. Carlson often heard the Chinese use a slogan -- "Gung-Ho" ("ready to go") -- which Carlson's Raiders began using themselves.

Soon, other Marines had adopted and adapted the expression, giving it its current meaning: "very enthusiastic."
