Stage Fright

One night in 1944, a V-2 rocket exploded outside the London theater where Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were performing. Holding a piece of fallen scenery, Lunt entered on cue, turned to Fontanne -- standing terrified on stage, watching plaster fall all around her -- and delivered his scripted line as the building shook: "Are you all right, darling?"

[So frequently did Lunt and Fontaine argue during a production of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew that Cole Porter used their off-stage bickering as the basis for his musical comedy Kiss Me Kate.]
