During the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, Anthony McAuliffe commanded the 10lst Airborne Division at Bastogne (an area of considerable strategic importance). Surrounded and out-numbered by a four to one margin, McAuliffe and his troops were ordered to surrender by the Germans. McAuliffe's reply? "Nuts!"
