George Antheil & the ballet mecanique

Among George Antheil's early avant-garde pieces, none caused a greater sensation than his 'ballet mecanique' -- scored for ten player pianos, sirens, automobile horns, airplane propellers, and other unlikely instruments. When the piece debuted at Carnegie Hall in 1927, a concert-goer near the orchestra pit, finding the ridiculous racket unbearable, finally tied his handkerchief to his cane... and raised a 'white flag' in abject surrender.
