Martinet

The French general Jean Martinet, who beat Louis XIV's soldiers into shape with relentless drills, naturally became a much-loathed man. He was later killed on the battlefield as he led a charge -- by gunfire from his own troops.

[A "martinet" has come to mean a strict military disciplinarian.]
