After looking for a copywriting job for several months, Gallagher reluctantly accepted a job in a business office accompanying clients to various functions. Though a dream job for many, Gallagher proved 'far too cynical' to succeed in a corporate environment and decided to get himself fired. How? He showed up for work one day dressed as a gangster (complete with a model Tommy gun) and ran around the office, hiding in cubicles and acting out a mock gun battle.
[Gallagher was once thrown out of a club for performing an early version of his Sledge-o-matic bit. The club's owner failed to find anything humorous about smashing fruits and vegetables with a rudimentary sledge hammer -- in the form of a tree-stump.]
