Gerard Roy was a colorful character. Known locally as The Man from Mars, he was the inventor (in the 1950s) of what was almost certainly the first pair of motorized roller skates. One day while zooming along on his skates, powered by a lawnmower engine strapped to his back, Roy was stopped by the local sheriff for exceeding the speed limit. "He didn't get a ticket," his daughter, Elaine, later recalled, "because the sheriff wasn't sure how to write it up."
[Roy often skated in the Encinitas Christmas parades dressed as a space alien; the aptlynamed street on which he was stopped? Vulcan Avenue.]
