Napoleon's troops drink leech-infested water

In 1799, Napoleon's troops, traveling through the desert on route to Syria, made the mistake of slaking their thirst with leech-infested water. When the leeches affixed themselves to the insides of their noses and throats, hundreds of soldiers died of blood loss and suffocation.
