Earl of Rosse builds his Leviathan telescope

In 1845 the amateur astronomer, the Earl of Rosse, built a telescope with a lens six feet in diameter. Dubbed the Leviathan, it was easily the largest telescope of its day. While Rosse was applauded for his efforts, however, the results he achieved were less than stellar. The problem? He built it in Ireland -- where the weather was so bad he could hardly ever use it.
