"Durng a survey expedition, I visited the island of Tristan da Cunha," Francis K. Pearse later recalled. "The islanders were delighted with the gifts brought by the expedition -- except the Bibles. During the course of the years so many Bibles had been sent to the island that there was now an average of seven copies per inhabitant."
