"Amor De Cosmos -- who helped to lead British Columbia into Confederation and was both premier and a federal MP from 1872 to 1874, became extremely eccentric in later life. He was said to use boot black on his beard. He also developed a morbid fear of electricity and refused to ride the new electrified tramcars after they were introduced in the early 1890s. His mental illness culminated in 1895, when -- having decided to stand for Parliament once again -- he had his name withdrawn when he stood to speak at a rally... and found himself utterly devoid of words."
[De Cosmos [born William Alexander Smith] was later declared clinically insane.]
