When Charondas -- having passed a law forbidding citizens from carrying weapons into the public assembly -- inadvertently wore his sword into a public meeting one day, a fellow citizen castigated him for violating his own law.

"By Zeus, I will confirm it," Charondas replied -- and, drawing his sword, immediately killed himself.
