Bruce Belfrage

"I'll never forget my first broadcast in 1924. I

[Bruce Belfrage] was playing the part of a sailor who had to sing a song while I pretended to row a boat. Suddenly the effects chap appeared between me and the mike with a basin of water and a spoon. He proceeded to splash the water about -- the idea, as I discovered later, was to represent the sound of oars -- and in no time had my score drenched. I sometimes wonder how I managed to finish the song."
