Carlton Club

When the Sir Iain Moncreiffe was nominated for membership of the exclusive Carlton Club, many questioned whether anyone should be admitted at such a young age. Indeed, Moncreiffe, one member observed, was only eighteen years old. "Yes," the chairman replied, "and the next candidate is eighty-two. That makes an average of fifty. Ideal age for this club. Both elected."
