Keeping Coolidge

At breakfast one morning, a guest at the White House watched with astonishment as President Calvin Coolidge quietly poured some milk from his cup into a saucer. Fearful of committing some unforeseen breach of etiquette, the guest followed suit.

Then, without a word, Coolidge bent down and placed the saucer on the floor... for the cat, which had been waiting unobserved beneath the table.

[Coolidge did not allow his wife to supervise any details of White House life. He did it all. Even the menus and housekeeping plans were submitted directly to him. She did not even buy her clothes without consulting him first.]
