Shipwreck Survivor

"I was one of the survivors from Anglo-India which went on to the rocks of Formosa

[Taiwan], then notorious for its piratical inhabitants," Thomas F. Milne once recalled. "I attempted to swim ashore with a rope. I was hurled forward by a gagantic wave and then -- blackness. I hit my head on a submerged rock and lost consciousness. A racking pain in the third finger of my left hand brought me to, and it seemed as if I had opened my eyes on a coffee-coloured world.

"A woman was sprawled across my chest and she was biting my finger just above my gold ring. She was trying to chew through the bone so that she could take off the ring, which would not pass over the knuckle."
