Royal Contempt

Informed of the death of her son, King George VI, Queen Mary simply remarked: "Oh!" Such was her apparent discombobulation, however, that her daughter, the Princess Royal, was quickly summoned to her quarters. The princess soon arrived, full of concern for her distraught mother, but was greeted only with frosty disdain: "When you come before the queen," said Mary, "please do your hair properly."

[The princess promptly returned to her room.]
