A. E. Housman's rooms at Trinity College, Cambridge (in an area known as Whewell's Court) were reached by climbing several flights of steps. In the year of his death, Housman suffered from ill health and the loss of several close friends and relatives. "I still go up my 44 stairs two at a time," he wrote to his brother that summer, "but that is in hopes of dropping at the top."
