Civil War

One day during the Civil War, New York Governor William Seward found himself in the midst of a group of people excitedly discussing the rumored destination of a secret movement of troops.

One woman, her suspicions raised by Seward's silence, confronted him. "Well, Governor Seward, what do you make of it?" she asked. "Where do you think they are going?"

Seward smiled. "Madam, if I did not know," he replied, "I would tell you."
