Wheat King

Despite the year's miserable harvest, 1783 proved a boon to Lafayette, whose barns (at his Chavaniac estate) were left brimming with wheat. "The bad harvest has raised the price," a bailiff astutely remarked one day. "This is the time to sell."

"No," Lafayette replied, thinking of the hungry peasants in the surrounding villages. "This is rather the time to give."
