Anatole France - Legion of Honor

Shortly after receiving the cross of the Legion of Honor, Anatole France (whose books, though critically acclaimed, brought him little money), was asked by a friend whether he would have preferred a cash prize to the cross, which apparently served no useful purpose.

"Oh, I wouldn't say that," France replied. "When I wear the sash, it will cover the stain on my jacket."
