Vespasian was approached one day by a favorite servant seeking a stewardship for a certain 'brother'. The emperor, having agreed to a private interview, asked the candidate how large a finder's fee he was planning to give the servant. "You may pay it directly to me," Vespasian declared before granting the desired post.
Some time later, Vespasian's servant, wondering about his lost commission, again asked the emperor about his 'brother'. "You'd better go and find yourself another brother," Vespasian replied. "The one you mistook for yours turned out to be mine."
