Wonderful Spectacle

Though America's founding fathers appreciated France's spiritual support of their cause, they were less pleased about unkept promises of material assistance. One day in 1776, a French admirer remarked to Benjamin Franklin that the revolution offered a wonderful spectacle. "Yes," Franklin tartly replied, "but the spectators don't pay!"
