Dr. Megaphone

One day while working at the famous Necker hospital in Paris, the French physician Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec found himself face to face with a patient so large that he was unable to hear her heart using standard medical techniques. The quick-thinking doctor simply rolled a sheet of paper into a tube, placed one end on the patient's chest, and listened to the other.

This problem (and makeshift solution) was the inspiration for Laennec's later invention of the stethoscope.
