While working as a private detective, Dashiell Hammett -- enlisted to aid in the search for a dangerous criminal -- was sent a detailed description of the man by the police chief in a southern town.

Hammett was amused to discover that the description, which included such details as the precise location of a mole on the man's neck, had neglected to mention the relatively significant fact... that he was missing an arm!
