One of F. Scott Fitzgerald's favorite stories concerned a certain Hollywood film producer who was embroiled in a nasty lawsuit. On the day before the case came to trial, he sent a dwarf and two other unusual performers to deliver messages to his opponent's key witness. The following day, the producer's attorney declared that the witness was mentally unbalanced. Brought to the stand, she was led to describe her strange visitors and their oddball messages. According to Fitzgerald's notes for The Last Tycoon
, "the jury shook their heads, winked at each other and acquitted" the wily producer.
