In 1910, Sir Thomas Beecham conducted the opening night performance of Richard Strauss's tragic opera Elektra at Covent Garden.

Beecham, disappointed by the quality of the singing, urged the orchestra to play progressively louder. "The singers think they are going to be heard," he explained, "and I'm going to make jolly well certain that they aren't."
