Patty Duke: Miracle Worker?

In 1958, shortly before she won acclaim for her portrayal of Helen Keller in the Broadway show The Miracle Worker, 12-year-old actress Patty Duke won $32,000 on TV's "$64,000 Challenge".

When she later reluctantly admitted that she had been given the answers in advance, one wag advised Duke to stay on Broadway, where she could "play not only deaf and blind -- but dumb as well."

[In April, 1957, $192,000, the biggest jackpot ever won on "The $64,000 Question," was awarded to a ten-year-old fifth grader named Eric Strom.]
