Anthrax Scare

The terrorist attacks in New York on September 11th 2001 were soon followed by an 'anthrax scare' during which several journalists and politicians received biohazardous anthrax-laden mail.

Indeed, ABC and NBC were both among the early targets. And CBS? "CBS finally received anthrax in the mail," David Letterman reported one evening. "As usual, we're number three!"

[Leno certainly had the better jokes: "President Bush announced twice last week he does not have anthrax," he reported one night. "Remember the good old days when the only thing we worried about the president catching was herpes?" And: "In Washington, it turns out there are still traces of anthrax in the Senate office building. Wouldn't it be ironic if, after all these years of living with Bill, Hillary winds up catching something from the Senate?"]

[No less than 175 anthrax hoaxes were reported in the United States in the three years before September 11th 2001.]
