Big Debt

Under President Ronald Reagan's tenure, America's federal debt ballooned four-fold as military budgets were progressively raised in an effort to outpace the Soviet Union and win the Cold War. Reagan was once asked whether he was worried about the deficit.

"I am not worried about the deficit," he declared. "It is big enough to take care of itself."
