During the 1897 Diamond Jubilee, Edward was often called upon to represent his demanding mother (Queen Victoria) at public events. On one such occasion, hearing mention of the popular hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," Edward muttered, "It's all very well about the Eternal Father, but what about my eternal mother?"
