Lackaday Toast

Guests at eighteenth-century dinner parties were often called upon to produce "sentiments" -- epigrammatical observations (or wishes) expressed as toasts at the end of the meal. One evening Robert Clive was called upon. His reply? "Alas and alackaday!" (ie. a lass and a lac -- 100,000 rupees -- each day).
