During his stay in France, Benjamin Franklin frequently played chess with the elderly Duchess of Bourbon. On one such occasion Franklin, having put her king in checkmate, reached over and proudly snatched it from the board. "We do not take kings so!" the shocked duchess cried. Franklin's reply? "We do in America!"
