Stilling Feet?

One day in the late 1740s, the naturalist Benjamin Stillingfleet was invited by Elizabeth Vesey to join her fashionable salon in Bath. When he declined on the grounds that he had no suitable clothes, she assured him that he need not concern himself with his attire.

Though his arrival in blue worsted stockings caused something of a stir, Stillingfleet soon became a regular -- and the salon soon acquired a new nickname: the "Blue Stocking Society."

[Thus the term "bluestocking" to refer to a fashionable society lady.]
