Eastwood & Russo

In an emotional scene in Wolfgang Petersen's In the Line of Fire (1993), Clint Eastwood, playing a secret service agent, reflects on his failure to prevent the assination of JFK. Petersen, seeking to evoke a spontaneous reaction, gave Rene Russo (Eastwood's lover in the film) a simple instruction: As Eastwood's monologue reached its emotional peak, Russo, standing just off camera, simply took his hand.

Tears welled in Eastwood's eyes and the scene was hailed as brilliant.
