Australian prime minister William Hughes was once subjected to a vicious verbal tirade in Parliament -- by a member of his own party.

When his attacker had finished speaking, Hughes calmly rose and cupped his hand to his ear, as though listening for something. At this, one of his colleagues, aware of the prime minister's impaired hearing, asked what he was waiting for. "I am waiting," Hughes replied, "for the cock to crow!"
