While visiting a menagerie exhibition in Washington one day, Davy Crockett amused his friends by enumerating the similarities between the features of one of the monkeys on display and those of a certain member of Congress.

Turning around, Crockett was shocked to find the said member standing directly behind him. "I suppose I ought to apologize," Crockett declared, "but I don't know whether to apologize to you or to the monkey."
