As an undergrad film student at Harvard and MIT, Mira Nair made a 16mm documentary about a young scalawag who had callously abandoned his poor bride in India to seek his fortune in America.

When she showed the man the completed work, which underscored the great misery which he had caused, he sat, apparently unmoved, until a particular scene near the end, which elicited a sudden cry of "My God!"

After the screening, Nair was surprised to find the young man still apparently untroubled by his behavior. But why, she was anxious to know, had he cried out during that particular scene?

Well, he explained, he had realized that the suit which he had been wearing at the time had accidentally been forgotten, and lost forever, at the cleaners!
