"It was after midnight and [famed director Billy Wilder] just announced that the evening was over: 'It's over!'

"Jimmy Stewart was there, the Lemmons, quite a few people. Suddenly surprised at the abrupt ending to the evening, they began filing out.

"The next day, I talked to Billy. 'Next time, you might just say goodnight and go to bed, and everybody would get the idea.' Wilder looked at me. 'What,' he said, 'and appear rude!?'"
