Artful Consideration

In 1863, Artemus Ward spent Christmas Eve with Mark Twain and some other friends at Barnum's Restaurant in Virginia. Having consumed impressive quantities of liquor, Ward proposed "a standing toast." After several unsuccessful attempts to rise to the challenge, he finally gave up, joining the others slumped at the table. "Well," he declared, "consider it standing."
