At the time of his death, Howard Hughes, with an estimated worth of $2.5 billion, was the richest man in the United States. He owned a private fleet of jets, hotels and casinos. He had, however, spent the last 15 years of his life as a drug addict, too weak in the end to even administer shots to himself. His 6'4" frame had shrunk to 6'1" and he weighed just 90 pounds. When he finally died in 1976, his nearest relative, a distant cousin, was asked to claim his body, and was moved to exclaim: "Is this Mr. Hughes!?"
