Peccadilloes

Upon their marriage in 1926, the composer Irving Berlin gave his wife a remarkable gift: the song "Always".

Years later, George S. Kaufman claimed that Berlin had tried to shoehorn the song into the Marx Brothers' film The Cocoanuts (which he had directed). Kaufman, perhaps recalling his own peccadilloes, quipped that the verse was unrealistic: "Instead of 'I'll be loving you, Always,'" he declared, "it should be 'I'll be loving you, Thursday'."
