One day in June 1976, the Boston Celtics met the Phoenix Suns for Game 5 in the year's NBA Championship series. In the dying seconds, the Celtics called a time-out. Unfortunately, they didn't have any time-outs left. Instead of slapping the team with a mandatory technical and handing Phoenix a free throw which would almost certainly have given them a 3?2 series lead, however, NBA official Richie Powers simply decided to ignore the call! His explanation? "I just couldn't see the Celtics losing that way, especially on their home court."
[Boston won the game in triple overtime and stole the championship in Game 6.]
